Advice for Those on the Path

Posted in Character, Faith786's Favorites, Islamic Lectures, Knowledge, Sufism, Taqwa, Tazkiyah at 8:43 am by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

I was honored to be present in one of the greatest classes of my life. The teacher was giving a lesson on how to get closer to Allah swt and how to go on the path. A person and I were taking notes, but I am putting up all that I remember before I forget:

–The only way to start going on the path or to get anywhere on the path is to do taubah. Lots of taubah. And more taubah after that. Read the rest of this entry »

The Seventeen Benefits of Tribulation–Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

Posted in Character, Islam, Islamic Lectures, Knowledge, Sufism, Taqwa, Tazkiyah at 2:27 am by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

I was listening to Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s CD: The Seventeen Benefits of Tribulation and I took some notes. That which is bolded is one of the seventeen noted benefits. I took extra notes on other stuff he said, but I am not including the Arabic word play he did in the beginning because my notes are a bit messed up there–>

The Seventeen Benefits of Tribulation

  • Prophet Muhammad (saw) never let tribulations get to him.
  • When Abu Bakr (RA) and the Prophet (saw) were in the cave, Abu Bakr was worried while the Prophet (saw) remained unperturbed.
  • In battles, people used to stand behind the Prophet (saw)
  • If you are easily perturbed, you are disconnected from Allah Read the rest of this entry »

Where is the Love–??? [?]

Posted in Character, Islam, Islamic Lectures, Knowledge, Sufism, Taqwa, Tazkiyah at 9:27 pm by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

I was passing a small halaqah in the masjid and I overheard a good 15 minutes and I *HAD* to put whatever notes I was able to scratch up on the back of my lab report. XD

–As Muslims, we believe that it is through love, we will reach Allah. Prophet Muhammad, Maulana Rumi, Imam Al Ghazali, and many other Muslim scholars emphasized the love of Allah through the love of what He loves and to love others for Him.

–It is through love for Allah that we will attain ultimate inner peace.

–All the prayer, fasting, ibadaat we do is all to increase this love.

–Many people may think that non Muslims may not understand this love or the truth of Islam, so they do not deserve this love, but love for Allah means to love all of His creation for Him, to love every person for being chosen by God to live. Does not every individual have a soul? For even that simple reason, do they deserve love. Read the rest of this entry »

Putting the Heart into Worship–Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

Posted in Aqidah, Islam, Islamic Lectures, Knowledge, Sufism, Tazkiyah, Videos at 3:52 am by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

I was about to write this epiphany I had, but before doing so, I wanted to somehow check if it Islamically possible. So I found this lecture by Hamza Yusuf on Youtube and it completely shook me when he said the stuff I realized. I took notes on the videos, but after hearing them and looking back at my notes, I think it isfar much better if you hear it yourself. If you still want my notes, I can post them up, but it may take a while.

Anyway, it is amazing and he really touched on stuff I wanted to write about. Maybe I’ll still put up that epiphany…. Read the rest of this entry »

Random Notes From a Really Old Lecture-Kindness

Posted in Aqidah, Character, Islam, Islamic Lectures, Tazkiyah at 9:08 pm by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

I do not know where these notes are from, but they are dated back to 2003, which is quite old if you ask me.

I do not remember who was the speaker or where it was, so I cannot prove these are valid notes, but I think they are beneficial, nevertheless.

***Agenda to Change Our Families*** Secrets to a Happy Marriage-Imam Zaid Shakir

Posted in Character, Islam, Islamic Lectures, Knowledge, Sufism at 1:06 am by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

I recently attended the workshop by Zaytuna called Agenda to Change Our Families. The title is a bit misleading. It was more like a marriage seminar. I am not someone who likes to analyze or over analyze the function, purpose, laws, etc. of marriage, but this particulr speech by Imam Zaid can also be applied to relationships in general (i.e. family, friends, co-workers, etc.), so I decided to put them up. I was really lazy that weekend, so I didn’t take many notes, let alone good ones. So forgive my lack of information.

Secrets to a Happy Marriage-Imam Zaid Shakir

1. Deepen trust.

  • Be with truthful people
  • Your religion is that of your friends (so pick your friends wisely)
  • Truthfulness is the key to trust.
  • Truthfulness leads to righteousness, which leads to Paradise.
  • There is no such thing as a trial free life (so be as honest as you can be.)
  • Individuals must trust each other to support one another.
  • People should not lie, belittle, oppress or betray each other.
  • People compliment each other; they are not meant to be perfectly equal and different-we are all connected. Read the rest of this entry »

Love for Allah Lecture at CPSA

Posted in Aqidah, Character, Hadith, Islam, Islamic Lectures, Knowledge, Sufism, Taqwa, Tazkiyah at 12:58 am by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

I am totally procrastinating my finals because I am horrified to find out there is a HUGE hole in my English paper, causing me to take out 4 pages, I cannot translate my Pus in Boots file, or the other passages for my Arabic final, and my psych final can go to jahanum from whence it came.

I’ll trust Allah that He’ll somehow make a means to help me do it.

Anyway, I am sorry for procrastinating these notes too; figure I better do something than nothing tonight. Btw, Sarah and I came a little late to the lecture, so my notes started when we came in. (Sarah, you are more than welcome to add to these)

Love for Allah Notes:
Insaan:

  • Ta’lif (education)-Light of Allah; Light of guidance
    • Hadith: Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave.
    • ilm is inheritance from the prophets–>different knowledge was directed to different prophets
      • i.e. Adam (as)-knowledge of names of different things, Dawud (as)-iron welding, Yusuf (as)-interpretation of dreams, Muhammad (saw)-teaching.
      • Angels bowed down to Adam because of his ‘ilm (and God said so)
    • ‘Ilm can come from parents, school, people, etc.
    • Mandatory to seek knowledge of the deen
    • Respect for scholars raises one’s station
  • Tabreer (action on knowledge)/(development)

Foundations of our Faith ~ Shaykh Husain Sattar
*Part 1*

<!–[if !supportLists]–>- <!–[endif]–>Although many people have sincerity, there’s often no basis in what they do

<!–[if !supportLists]–>- <!–[endif]–>Every human being is composed of 2 parts: body and soul

<!–[if !supportLists]–>o <!–[endif]–>Body was created. It develops over time, grows old, and dies

<!–[if !supportLists]–>- <!–[endif]–>Everything in this world created, and likewise, develops and eventually dies

<!–[if !supportLists]–>o <!–[endif]–>The ayah, “Verily your Lord is Allah, He who created the sky and Earth in 6 days,” shows that creation is related to time

<!–[if !supportLists]–>- <!–[endif]–>The other type of creation is instantaneous creation, where Allah swt says ‘Be’ and it is. This is how the soul was created.

<!–[if !supportLists]–>o <!–[endif]–>In the Qur’an Allah swt says (to Prophet SAS): they ask you concerning the soul, tell them it is from the command of Allah (17:85).

<!–[if !supportLists]–>- <!–[endif]–>Whatever comes from the created world pertains to the created world, and what comes from the commanding world pertains to the commanding world. So what benefits the soul comes from beyond what’s created (ie Quran), and can’t be satisfied by what’s created (ie eating chocolate won’t help you feel less depressed).

Islam: A Series of Fortunate Events: A Message for All of Humanity: A Call to Islam-Mufti Azeemuddin

Posted in Character, Hadith, Islam, Islamic Lectures, Knowledge at 12:33 am by faith786

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum,

Sorry for not posting for a while-midterms. Now that it is spring break, I’ll try to catch up on some notes I was supposed to type. I didn’t get to attend the second lecture of the series, but if I do get hold on someone else’s notes or get a recording of it, then I’ll try to type up those notes too.

I guess the lecture was called A Message for All of Humanity: A Call to Islam, but I think it was aimed towards Muslims (95% of the audience was Muslims) So the topic was more about Muslims rethinking their deen (meaning, the true value of it and how great Islam is).

Well, here are my messy notes. I got too lazy to edit them. I might later….

– Islam: A series of fortunate eventsàcoming of Rasulullah is really a fortunate event

– What did Rasulullah spend his life for? àQuran: We have sent you for the world(s) as mercy [to alliviate bad times, and bring peace]

– Alaminàencompasses everything (not just our world-worlds)

– Surah Fatihahàall praises to Allah for all the worlds (this dunyah and akhirah)

– Prophet (sas) was a source of mercy for everything in this world and hereafter

– Prophet (sas) teachings benefit everything (all different categories of life, human and non human)

– Purpose of Quran-Prophet uses the Quran to take people from darkness to light with the will of Allah. Read the rest of this entry »
